Act One
Scene 1
Derkylos and his friends (Aetios the smart one, Adras the strong one, and Alexandros the laid back one) are sitting by the beach. They are talking to each other about there escape plan to go and see if the hidden cave under the cave is real. Derkylos' younger sister Adasteia hides behind them listening to their conversation.
DERKYLOS:
I want to run away and find the great hidden cave under the brilliant sea. I want to show everybody that I am not a weak child any more. I am a warrior and nothing can get in my way.
ADRAS:
We leave tomorrow!
Adasteia smirks. The boys slowly get up as Adastia sprints back to the city making sure the boys don't see her.
ATIOUS:
We should leave tomorrow early, as soon as Apollo starts to let the sun rise.
ALEXANDROS:
We will meet "megálo déntro"(the great tree).
DERKYLOS:
Early! You must be early! The people of the city will start to gather for the agora. They can not see us. We will be punished by the tyrant, we shall not let that happen.
AETIOS:
I will acquire the food.
ADRAS:
And I the weapons.
Scene 2
As derkylos slowly sneaks out of his house and to the "megálo déntro," Adasteia follows him making sure Derkylos does not see her.
Once they get to "megálo déntro," Andras is sitting against the tree throwing pebbles at the dirt. Alexandros is throwing olives at Andras' head. Adastia hides in a bush.
DERKYLOS:
Where shall Aetios be?
ALEXANDROS:
I don’t know.
Soon Aetios comes sprinting back with loads of food.
AETIOS:
RUN, GO GO GO!
They sprint as fast as they can. Adastia had a hard time keeping up with out letting the boys see her. She starts to breathe loudly. Her chest almost pops out of her. Derylos looks back as she dives into a bush.
ADASTIA:
(whispering to herself)
That was a close one.
She quickly climbs out of the bush with a cut from her knee to her ankle on her right leg and a thorn stuck in her hand. She goes after the boys, but this time she is limping.
Scene 3
The boys stops at a small pond. They sit chatting with weird expressions on their faces. Adastia sits behind a tree listening to the conversation while thinking about when she should tell them that she has been following them the whole time.
DERKYLOS:
What was all of that about?
AETIOS:
What?
DERKYLOS:
All that running!
ALEXANDROS:
Yes. You are usually the lazy one.
AETIOS:
Hey!
ADRAS:
Alexandros speaks the truth!
Alexandros, Derkylos, Andras start laughing non-stop while Aetios has a straight face. Adastia stands behind the tree trying not to laugh.
DERKYLOS:
Did you guys hear that? It sounded like my sisters' laughter.
ALEXANDROS:
I think that somebody misses home!
This time all the boys laugh except Derkyklos.
DERKYLOS:
So, what was all of that back there?
AETIOS:
What?
ADRAS:
The running! You never run that much!
AETIOS:
You must promise you won't get mad.
DERKYLOS:
Yes!
Aetios takes a deep breath.
AETIOS:
I stole the food.
They all laugh, rolling on the ground. Except Aetios.
AETIOS:
What is so funny now?
DERKYLOS:
(trying not to laugh)
We do that all the time.
Aetios blushes. His face turns bright like the blood coming out of his leg-- he scratched his leg on a brach as he was running.
Scene 4
After walking a long way, the boys reach a tree under the bright stars and decide to stop for the night.
Adastia, still following them, thinks about telling them that she has been following them this whole time but decides that she should wait a night or two.
AETIOS:
(talking excitedly)
I wonder if we will ever find the cave! I hope we do, other wise I worried my mom for nothing. I hope she is well. I miss her cooking. There is Adara... Oh, how I miss her. She is so pretty! After all, that is what her name means.
DERKYLOS:
Be quite! Otherwise, if we run out of the food that you stole, we will eat you first!
Alexandros laughs.
DERKYLOS:
Don't worry, Alexandros! You will go right after! Now, everybody, go to sleep! We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow. Nevermind, more like a big week ahead of us!
Scene 5
The sun rises. All of the boys wake except Alexandros. He lays on the ground snoring loud. The other boys collect olives and chuck them at his face. He jumps up.
ALEXANDROS:
(startled, with drool falling down his cheek)
What was that?
DERKYLOS
Lets go!
